3 Common Types of Electrical Issues in HVAC Systems

If your heating or cooling system isn’t running properly, it could be that there’s a problem with one or more electrical components. As one of the top HVAC and roofing companies in the local area, we recommend that you call a certified technician rather than try to fix the problem yourself. Electrical problems, after all, bring with them a serious risk of injury if not handled properly.

In today’s blog post, we take a look at the three common types of electrical issues in HVAC systems.

Thermostat problems. Many homeowners resort to replacing their old thermostat on their own simply because it only has a few moving parts. Unless you’re well-versed in all things electrical, it’s not advisable to attempt repairing or replacing yours by yourself. Anything could go wrong with the wiring, including broken or pinched wires or a failed connection. Faulty thermostat wiring can compromise your HVAC system, causing it to turn off quickly or run longer than it should.

Faulty HVAC system connections. Our certified technicians and roofers have handled this common electrical problem in HVAC systems. In many cases, the wiring has gone bad due to normal wear and tear. This causes the wires to fray or corrode, then disconnect if tampered with by an unqualified person. A blown fuse can also be to blame for faulty connections. Designed to protect the equipment from excessive current, this could also signify a deeper problem concerning electrical components or wiring, which would require a technician’s expertise.

Failing capacitor. Inside an HVAC system is a capacitor that stores electricity for the other components that require a jolt of power to work. These include the fans of the outdoor and indoor units. If, however, you turn on the equipment and it doesn’t start or stay on for long, or you hear a clicking noise, the capacitor could be having problems. Get in touch with your technician immediately if any of these signs become apparent.
