The problem with addressing holes and cracks in the ductwork is the limited space afforded in which to maneuver. Conventional methods of sealing either only partially address the issue or use up too much sealant. Aeroseal is a duct-sealing method that addresses both of these problems. Sealing the Ductwork
The typical ductwork repair process requires locating holes and cracks by sight, which can take a long time depending on the size of the house’s ducts. The process with Aeroseal is different, in that the first step is to seal all vents and returns. The ducts are then hooked up to a computer-controlled system that controls pressurization levels and Aeroseal output. A smoke test is conducted to find leaks by releasing a harmless form of smoke into the vents, after which there will be puffs of smoke that indicate where leaks are present. Pre-installation system performance is also measured.
Applying Aeroseal
Installation begins as Aeroseal is pumped into the ductwork. Since Aeroseal is delivered as a fine mist, it isn’t readily visible. However, Aeroseal can be observed to work in real time, as the cracks and holes revealed by the earlier smoke test gradually get filled in. The process is entirely computer-controlled, and changes in the interior pressure will signal to the computer when to stop pumping out Aeroseal. This method ensures minimal waste and maximum performance. We often get asked if Aeroseal is safe to breathe, and we can confidently say that it has been proven to be safe, as it’s been laboratory-tested and found to contain extremely low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
After Installation
Once Aeroseal has set, a second smoke test is conducted to make sure Aeroseal has done its job, then system performance is measured again. At the end of the process, the homeowner will receive a certificate of completion, as well as a before-and-after report on ductwork performance. The ductwork will then be set back up with the HVAC system, after which the homeowner should feel a dramatic improvement.
