Sweaty Ductwork: Causes, Fixes and Prevention

Sweaty ductwork might sound harmless, but it can actually decrease the efficiency of your Hader HVAC system, as well as promote mold and mildew growth on walls and ceilings and in attics, basements and crawl spaces. Mold is not only unsightly, but also dangerous to your health. This is why it’s important to make sure you don’t have sweaty ductwork.

Why Does Ductwork Sweat?

Essentially, there are two causes behind sweaty ductwork: one, uninsulated or poorly-insulated ducts; and two, humid air coming into contact with cold ductwork.

Insulation issues put ductwork at the same temperature as the air passing through them, so when your air conditioning system is running, cool air will make the ductwork cold. Then, when your heating is turned on, warm, humid air touches the cold ductwork as it’s passing through, resulting in the formation of condensation.

How to Fix and Prevent Sweaty Ductwork

  • Insulate – Ductwork is made of metal and has no insulating abilities whatsoever, so it takes on the temperature of the air passing through it and the air around it. Insulating according to code requirements will prevent this problem and keep condensation from forming.
  • Seal – Sealing gaps and cracks in the walls surrounding your ductwork will help keep indoor humidity levels manageable. The lower the moisture in the air passing through the ductwork, the lower the chances of condensation forming.
  • Dehumidify – You can also keep the level of moisture in the air low by using a dehumidifier. This fix is best for ductwork located in attics or crawl spaces.
