Ideal Thermostat Settings for the Summer Season

The summer season can get so hot that it’s tempting to just run the air conditioner at full blast 24/7. This of course will result in higher energy bills, and could also damage your HVAC system. In this blog, chimney repair and HVAC contractor Hader discusses how programming your thermostat to ideal temperatures can help keep your home more comfortable

Home Thermostat Settings

The Department of Energy recommends setting your thermostat temperature to 78 degrees when you’re home. This is the perfect temperature to stay cool during the day while keeping energy consumption to a minimum. If this feels uncomfortable, try the following:

  • Turn on Your Fans — Your ceiling or standalone fan helps maintain proper airflow and evenly distributes cool air throughout the room. Fans consume far less energy compared to setting your thermostat a few degrees lower than 78 degrees.
  • Run a Dehumidifier — The summer season brings with it humid indoor air. High levels of humidity makes the air feel warmer than it really is. Run a dehumidifier and set it to a relative indoor humidity level between 45% and 55%.
  • Fix insulation Issues — If your exterior walls feel warm to the touch, your home may have insulation issues. If heat is leaking in through the walls, windows and entry doors, chances are you need to have a chimney repair and other repair work done before using your HVAC system.

Thermostat Settings for When You’re Away

Whether you’re going out for the day or the weekend, turn the thermostat up 10 degrees higher to save energy. Higher indoor temperatures can help slow down the heat that would otherwise be leaking into your home. Programmable thermostats, as well as those hooked up to a smart home system, provide the flexibility you need to automate these changes.Call Hader for All Your HVAC Needs
