There’s a lot of talk among HVAC experts about the recommended frequency of changing your HVAC filters. There are proponents for replacing the filters once a month that make very reasonable arguments for the advantages of this time frame, while on the other hand, others advocate for changing the filters only as needed, as determined by a regular system inspection.
While each side makes some convincing points about their position, our experts at Hader believe the solution lies somewhere between the two. In determining when filter changes are needed, it’s important to understand balance; however, sometimes this is not always clear. Here are the top factors that will help you discern when the time is right.
Usage Levels
How often do you run your HVAC system? If your heating and/or air conditioning has been running consistently for six months on up to a year, then you’ll need more frequent filter changes, as the continuous air circulation means dust, soot and other contaminants will accumulate at a much faster rate. At this level of usage, you’ll need to change your filters as often as once a month.
Residential Factors
The number of people living in your home is also an important contributing factor. With large families, there are more activities happening inside the home, kicking up more dust and dirt inside your vents and ducts. Additionally, human residents are not the only ones to consider. If you have pets like dogs or cats, particularly long-haired breeds like Pomeranians or Maine Coons, you’re more likely to have fur added to the mix. If this is the case, change your filters at least once every month, and definitely don’t wait more than 90 days to do so.
