Like most home utilities, HVAC systems are exposed to daily wear and tear. It’s true that HVAC care and maintenance should be left to your trusted HVAC contractor. However, in this blog, Hader HVAC shares things that you, as a homeowner, can do to help minimize heating and air conditioning wear and t
Change the Air Filter
Air filters catch dust, pollen and other indoor air pollutants. Over the span of a few months, they become clogged, which can block airflow, causing low output and putting additional strain on the HVAC system. Fortunately, air filters are user-replaceable, which means you don’t have to call an HVAC technician to do it. Air filters can be ordered online if a local hardware store doesn’t carry them.
There are two things you should remember before ordering a replacement: one is that air filters come in different standard sizes, so make sure you’re buying one that fits your air conditioning system. The other is you have the option to upgrade to more efficient air filters if your home has indoor air quality issues.
Keep the Vents Clear
One of the most common mistakes homeowners make with their HVAC systems is blocking the air vents with furniture or decor. Plan the furniture placement in your home so that air circulation isn’t blocked. In addition to making your HVAC system more efficient, this also helps reduce the damage that warm or cold air might do to your furniture.
Upgrade Your Thermostat
If you’re still using a traditional thermostat for your whole-home HVAC system, you’re missing out on the benefits of a programmable one. The most basic programmable thermostat can be set to lower the room temperature at night for a comfortable night’s sleep, then raise it back up in the morning. When choosing a new thermostat, make sure it’s compatible with your existing HVAC system.
If you follow different weekday and weekend routines, consider upgrading to 5-2 thermostats, which can be programmed for five-weekday and two-weekend cycles. 5-1-1 thermostats let you fine-tune your weekends with two different weekend cycles. There are also 7-day thermostats that allow you to pick different cycles for each day of the week.
