How to Choose the Best Heating System for Your Home

As a homeowner, you might have wondered sometimes if your home heating system is right for your needs. After all, the operating costs for heating your living space change every year because fuels are market-driven, which by itself is volatile. This is why when your units are past their prime, it’s better to explore other options to maximize efficiency and cut down on the costs of your utility bills.

Types of Heating Systems

Fortunately, most heating and cooling systems nowadays are designed to be energy-efficient so you can save money in the long run. Choosing the right one for your home, however, will still depend on your area’s common energy source, your home’s distribution system, and the overall cost.

Here are the most popular heating systems:

  • Furnace. Also called forced warm-air or forced warm-air distribution system, this is the most preferred choice among homeowners. It works by blowing heated air through ducts to heat your home. It creates heat by mixing fuel with air, which is then burned. Next, the flames warm up the heat exchanger and the fans push heat through the ductwork.

  • Boiler. This type of unit distributes heat in hot water, which provides heat as it moves through radiators or other devices in rooms. Unlike a furnace that uses a fan and duct system, it utilizes a pump to distribute hot water. It usually uses heating oil or natural gas to operate.

  • Heat Pumps. Heat pumps are double-duty units that make a great alternative for furnaces and air conditioners. In warm days, they transfer heat from your home into the outdoors, while they bring outdoor heat into your home during the cold months. Nearly all heat pumps use forced air delivery systems to regulate indoor temperature. Ductless split-type heat pumps are also available for homes without duct system. Wall-mounted units can be installed in individual rooms, which are connected to a single outdoor unit.
